King Kong and Godzilla Will Return in 2027 with a Supernova Movie Event

Starting with the more grounded, human-focused, but still rather flawed Godzilla in 2014, the MonsterVerse has relentlessly been pumping out new movies every two or three years. Godzilla made $529 million worldwide, Kong: Skull Island, three years later, went up to $570 million.

As The Numbers tracks, however, Godzilla: King of the Monster sunk to a $387 million return, but smashing the two kaiju together in Godzilla vs. Kong proved a colossal success. $470 million worldwide green-lit a sequel three years later, but the studio was tentative about allowing another.

It turns out that Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was the highest earner of the bunch and on the smallest budget. For $135 million, the CGI-soaked flick made $572 million worldwide. So, with another three-year break, cinema goers will soon be greeted by the return of these iconic characters in Godzilla x Kong: Supernova.

A Classic of Entertainment to Thrill the Masses

While film fans who hold story as the most important element of the medium will lament it, it’s impossible to deny the popularity of King Kong taking on Godzilla on the big screen. A fascination with this mash-up goes all the way back to 1962 with King Kong vs Godzilla. Now, modern audiences are turning up to see them join forces against greater threats.

Following some of the biggest movie franchises around right now, the MonsterVerse established the kaiju through points of origin stories in the wider narrative. Standalone films set the stage in this series, but all of them certainly benefited from pop culture and decades of productions doing a lot of the heavy lifting in regards to audience familiarity.

Godzilla has been a cinematic favourite for decades, while the great ape King Kong has revelled in several renditions away from the big screen. A take on Kong went from enemy to ally of a certain Italian plumber, while he gets to truly rampage as the protagonist in the world of online slots.

Supernova is on the Horizon

Legendary Pictures had to wait to see if the second Godzilla x Kong would tumble as the second Godzilla movie did, but the return more than encouraged them to get the next one rolling. As the title Godzilla x Kong: Supernova would suggest, their next one’s going to be even more audacious and outlandish.

Earlier this year, production began with a firm release date added to the announcement. As Empire Online reports, 26 March 2027 is locked in for this next entry into the kaiju-clobbering franchise. Given the title, some suspect SpaceGodzilla is on the way, whose 1994 Toho film depicted Godzilla as having massive crystallised shoulder pauldrons.

It won’t be entirely about the great big CGI monsters, though. Supernova’s cast includes Sam Neill, Kaitlyn Dever, Matthew Modine, Delroy Lindo, Dan Stevens, Alycia Debnam-Carey, and Jack O’Connell. Even so, the expectation is that intergalactic threats will come to challenge these two iconic kaiju.

Following the rampant box office success of the MonsterVerse so far, a sixth entry became inevitable by the second half of 2024. In 2027, the world will get to see exactly what Godzilla x Kong: Supernova has to offer.
